William H. Johnson an Artist of the World Scene [caption title].

New York: Harmon Foundation, [1956]. [4]pp. on a single folded sheet. Minor wear. Very good plus. Item #5583

A rare prospectus and biographical account detailing the career of prominent African-American painter William H. Johnston. Issued by the Harmon Foundation, the work covers Johnston's early career, his marriage to Danish artist Holcha Krake, his painting activities across Norway, the change in his technique after moving to New York, and his development thereafter. The final page also includes a timeline of Johnston's career and a chronological listing of his art exhibits. The text is illustrated with a baker's dozen reproductions of Johnston's work from his early gouaches to later oils, including his self portrait. The work was produced by the Harmon Foundation, a vitally-important organization in the African-American art community that is described on the Harmon Museum website as "the first major foundation supporting African-American creativity and ingenuity" and "one of the first to give national recognition to the achievements of African-Americans." OCLC reports just four copies of this work, at Columbia, Virginia Museum of Fine Art, the Bancroft, and UCLA.
