The Farm Workers: America's Disinherited [cover title].
New York: [ca. 1940s]. Eight-panel brochure, folds out to overall size of 9 x 15 inches. Minor wear and toning. Very good plus. Item #4910
A sobering and informative informational brochure on the plight of sharecroppers and their families, issued by the National Sharecroppers Fund, Inc. (NSF) founded in the mid-1930s to provide financial assistance and information on government aid programs to organizations dedicated to improving living conditions for the rural poor. The present brochure is profusely illustrated with photographs of sharecroppers performing back-breaking work, the unsanitary conditions under which they and their children work and live, their rickety housing, and more. The text informs the reader on "How American Farm Workers are Disinherited" (no minimum wage, no maximum work hours, no Social Security, etc.), the plight of their children (child labor, little or no schooling, etc.), and how the reader can help through supporting the work of the National Sharecroppers Fund. The last panel includes a list of the National Board members of the organization, which includes Mary McLeod Bethune, Charles S. Johnson, Fay Bennett, and about twenty others. No copies reported in OCLC, though it is logical to assume others exist in larger collections of materials on sharecropping and the NSF.
