Rare Alabama Promotional

Extracts from "Alabama As It Is, or, The Immigrants' and Capitalists' Guide Book to Alabama."

Chicago: J.M.W. Jones Stationery and Printing Company, 1889. 20pp. Original printed wrappers, stapled. Minor edge wear, small chip to bottom corner of rear wrapper. About very good. Item #13184

A very rare promotional work on the great state of Alabama. The work was issued by the Passenger Department of the Monon Route of the Louisville, New Albany, and Chicago Railroad, and "Revised to Date by The Southern Immigration Co., Florence, Alabama." The text contains informational passages about Alabama taken from B.F. Riley's 1888 larger work, Alabama As It Is, or, The Immigrants' and Capitalists' Guide.... This work was likely produced specifically as a promotional for Florence and the railroad. The various passages include details about the soil, climate, "The Cereal Belt," the Tennessee Valley, Lauderdale County, with the longest passage (the final seven pages) reserved for the city of Florence itself. The outer rear wrapper is printed with a map of the Monon Route. OCLC reports just two institutional holdings, at Auburn and the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center.
