The Sciolist. Published Sporadically by the Pagan Press.

Loxley, AL: The Pagan Press, 1942. 4pp., on a single folded sheet. Item #13180

A very rare pocket-sized amateur magazine produced in Loxley, Alabama, southeast of Mobile in 1942. This is the first number of only two known issues, comprised, according to its self-deprecating author H.E. Fuller, of "fifth-rate verse." The two very brief poems (one about the South) and two jokes leave it to the reader to decide its quality, but the whole production is clearly intended to be humorous; a sciolist is a person who claims expertise in a subject but in reality has only a superficial understanding of said subject. Fuller notes in his brief introduction that he has recently joined the National Amateur Press Association. Interestingly, Howard Elmsere Fuller (1895-1985) was a rural letter carrier who published exactly one story in Weird Tales in 1925. OCLC reports just a single institutional holding of The Sciolist, at NYPL (both issues).
