The prospective first issue of an unrecorded periodical from New Bedford in 1831. The front wrapper prints a message from a literary agent named William C. Taber, stating that "is proposed to continue this work as soon as a sufficient number of subscriptions shall be obtained." Taber also operated a store in New Bedford that sold books, stationery, and cutlery. The rear wrapper also prints an advertisement from Taber, along with ads for two other booksellers, William Howe and John C. Almy. The opening "Address" of the publication is signed in print by the editor, who signs simply, "G.W.W." Census records for New Bedford in 1830 report a George Wheaton and a George Weaver, though confident identification of the editor here remains elusive.
In his Address, the editor states that the present publication is intended for "the culture and advancement of Literature" among the people of New Bedford, as most "paper that are published and circulated among this community are for the most part devoted to the news, merchandize, or politics...." The pieces in the magazine include "An Adventure -- The Multiplication of Books," "Eloquence Ancient and Modern," "Lights and Shadows -- A Record of Reveries," "History of the English Language," "Extracts from Thomas Fuller," "Of Fame," and a selection from "Curiosity" by Charles Sprague.
No records in OCLC. We are unsure if any additional issues were ever published.
