Rare Gay & Lesbian Newsletters from Houston

Montrose Activity Center Newsletter. Serving the Lesbian and Gay Community of Houston [two issues].

Houston: October and November, 1990. Two issues, each 12pp., printed on newsprint. Central horizontal fold, minor toning and wear. Very good. Item #12873

A pair of issues of an important newsletter dedicated to the gay and lesbian community in the Montrose area of Houston, an historically diverse and bohemian neighborhood just west of downtown. The Montrose Activity Center is described here as a nonprofit "whose purposes are to increase understanding of social racial and sexual minorities, and to encourage acceptance and tolerance of alternative lifestyles so that together the citizens of the city of Houston and the state of Texas may work in the spirit of peaceful cooperation to build a better society." The present issues contain a wealth of information on local issues important to the LGBTQIA+ community, such as the emergence of "gay spending power," stories of coming out, a calendar of events, an article on the Austin Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival, and more. One particularly resonant article covers the recent controversy over the appointment of the new Executive Director of the AIDS Equality League. Though both newsletters are identified as Issue 26, this is a misprint on the November issue, which is actually number 27. OCLC lists just one institutional holding, of issues 25 and 26, at Texas A&M University.
