Kothmann Ranch in Frio County, Texas. FOR SALE [caption title].

[N.p., presumably Mason or San Antonio: between 1930 and 1945]. Broadside cadastral map, 12 x 9 inches. Heavily tanned, some chipping around edges, soft creases. Good condition. Item #12787

A very rare promotional broadside advertising the sale of the Kothmann Ranch southwest of San Antonio. A map of the ranch dominates about half of the broadside, showing the composition of the Kothmann Ranch as an amalgam of plots labeled with the names of the original grantees, including Stephen F. Austin and Samuel Williams. According to the promotional text at the bottom, the ranch "consists of 5240 acres of land in the S.E. part of Frio County, Texas, on St. Miguel Creek, in the Artesian Belt, about 55 miles S.W. of San Antonio." Further, the Kothmann Ranch is described as having "three artesian flowing wells," "a running stream supported by these wells," "100 acres in a good state of cultivation on which principally corn and cotton is raised," with about 1,200 acres of "good farming land" on which the "soil is principally black-sandy." Timber on the land is mainly "live oak, black-brush and 'Wahia' which is all good browsing for cattle" and "along the creek there are hackberry and water elm." Any interested parties are encouraged to contact real estate agent Charles Bierschwale in Mason, Texas, northwest of Austin. Newspaper records are unclear about the timing of the sale of the Kothmann Ranch in Frio County. We can only posit the present broadside sometime before 1945, when agent Charles Bierschwale died, though it is likely from significantly before then. OCLC records a single institutional holding, at SMU.
