A rare communication from Texas during the Mexican-American War, in which an Ohio Army soldier describes his march through Texas. Boggs writes as follows: "We arrived here last night about 9 o'clock. We crossed the Sabine River at Sabine town and traveled 5 miles in the dark. If you look at the map, you can see our route. We came through Trinity and Alexandria and are now 5 miles into Texas. We will sleep tonight at Saint Augustine 20 miles from this place. Biddle is ahead of us. I have not seen him, but he is well and getting on very well. He will get $100 per month. He has done better than most other captains. We will get to San Antonio about October and will expect to find some letters from you and those at home." Captain Charles John Biddle served as a captain in the Mexican-American War before serving as a lieutenant colonel for the Union in the Civil War. Biddle was also a prominent lawyer, politician, and newspaper editor in Philadelphia.
